Subject: Dispute unauthorised charges on your credit card bill

Hi all,

You may sometimes find some unauthorized charges, on your credit card bill. For example, you may be charged for something you have not purchased or there may be charge with a wrong amount. The Fair Credit Billing Act refers to these mistakes of credit card companies, as"billing errors". I would like to share the steps you should take, to dispute billing errors with your credit card (CC) company. They are as follows:

1) You should always dispute errors in writing. Faxing, sending e-mails, or talking to customer care representatives of your CC company is not always effective. You must also retain a copy of the "dispute letter".

2) According to the Fair Credit Billing Act, disputes should be sent within the 60 day deadline. Your 60 day deadline starts from the day the card issuer has mailed you the credit card bill, and not from the day you receive it. So if you want to dispute any errors on your bill, you should send a "dispute letter" as soon as possible.

3) The "dispute letter" should include your name, account number and details of the error you are disputing. If you are disputing any wrong amount that has been charged, you can enclose bills, as proof of the correct amount.

4) You must send the dispute letter to the address for "Billing Inquiries". You will find the address of "Billing Inquiries" if you read both sides of your credit card bill carefully. If you send your "Dispute Letter" to the address for payments, it will not be effective.

Hi Scott,

I have also heard that The Fair Credit Billing Act protects the cardholder's rights while disputing. You are allowed to hold back payments for the credit card charges you are disputing. The credit card company cannot report the disputed item to the credit bureaus, till the issue is solved.

If the CC company verifies the charge as an error, they will also remove any late fees related to the disputed charge. Even if the CC company proves the charges as correct, the debtor is given almost 10 days time to repay the charges.

Rockwood, what you heard is correct. You do not have to pay for disputed items until they are resolved. This saves the consumer from any recourse from their credit card company. If they had the item or charge already paid for then some would be less likely to work on a resolution.
Also people really need to watch their statements closely. Some credit card accounts only have a number opr two difference and if someone hurriedly puts in a number they could very well mistaken one and charge your card.
My sister had this happen a year ago. When she called they found the problem and it was as I described above. Luckily it was someone who lived in another state so she had no problem showing it was not her charge. Had she not cought it she would have been paying $139 for someone elses shoes.
