Subject: Is it safe to give my Social Security number over the phone?

Posted on Fri Sep 05, 2008 5:06 pm

Put your question here ...I recently received a credit report from Equifax that reported that I have a credit card registered with "FIA Csna," which - apparently is "Bank of America." I called the toll free number given on the Equifax credit report that was for Bank of America and tried to cancel the credit card. However, the only way I could do this - according to the Bank of America person on the phone - was to give my social security number (since there were a lot of other people with my same name). I gave the account number given on the Equifax report but the lady on the phone for Bank of America said that there were some numbers missing from the account number I gave her. She said that the entire account number was not given on my credit report. Is it safe for me to give them my social security number? I was afraid to give it to her and so I could not close the credit card account.

Yes you are safe. A lot of these companies are using social security numbers, mothers maiden name and so on to verify account. Anytime I even call and inquire about one of my open account they give me a million questions. I don't mind them doing this because I feel they are really helping protect peoples identity since identity fraud has become a lucrative business.

Hi Linda
I don't think that there will be any problem if you share your social security number with FIA CSNA because until and unless you give them the social security number or other details confidential to you and is known only by FIA CSNA, they cannot process your request as you cannot provide them with the correct account number. However, if you find it risky giving them your social security number, you can place a fraud alert service with the credit bureaus after you tell them your social security number.

True. I like that the credit bureaus offwer the fraud alert services. It is kind of like an extra protection program.
