This company is just another branch of Sallie Mae, which is only a name. The actual company is SLM Corp d/b/a Sally Mae et al. This is in reality an octipus of many front named organizations; whose primary objective is to procure old debts and try to collect. They have been sucessful in Court and do use fear tactics etc. So you need to check your state for the time an old debt is no longer collectable. It is called "statute of repose".

Pop, I believe what you actually mean is Statute of limitations instewad of statute of response. Commonly referred to around here as the SOL. You are correct that after a certain period of time (SOL) the debt can not be legally sued for and won. They may however try to collect the debt for the next 100 years if they want. As long as you do not pay oln the debt and restatrt the Statute of limitations than you can always send them a certified letter demanding they quit contacting you.

Yes Doc is right on this one. I have seen others list this collection group and it was not always for student loans. You also need to pay attention to your income tax. Somehow they attached my sister in laws and her husbands income tax return one year for student loans. I don't know how they did it but I remember the loans were pretty old and they still attached.

I have researched a lot since the pre-recorded calls started coming. Apparently it's DirecTV and they are calling about an early termination fee-I assume. I did my year with them and cancelled and paid the last amt for my services ($79) I told them when I cancelled I can no longer afford this and she mentioned something about early termination and that they DO NOT take installments......I didn't have my agreement handy at the time where it lists the stipulations. IF I OWE IT - they will get it when I have it - so call away. My credit is so messed up now I really don't care.

I just read more posts - if this is Sallie Mae related I give up. I have one student loan - I pay for 2 months at one time (like when I have the money) I do it online so there are no coupon booklets or stubs to include - By god, next month Sallie Mae is calling about my missing a payment. I explained to them how I pay and they will check. So much for that.

It is better if you make regular payment of your student's loan so that you can avoid the late fees which they may charge for not paying on time. Even if you pay online through bank account, there is an transaction confirmation number which itself is the proof that you have made the payment towards the debt. Moreover, your account statement will also show this confirmation number which you can produce as a valid proof. _________________ All the Best

CBE has been calling my phone for the past 2 months during the day while I am at work. I know this because I check my phone for calls when I get home. I am on the DO Not Call list. I had no idea who these people were. They never left a message. Yesterday, they called and my husband answered. They asked to speak to my neice. My neice does not and never has lived with us. She has a different last name from ours. In fact, I hardly ever see her, and she lives in another state. How did CBE get my number and link her to us? Could they be using her phone records to call all of her contacts?

Hi Ellen
CBE Group is a collection agency with BBB accreditation. If you have been receiving calls from them, then it must be because you owe some debt to a creditor who has sold off the debt to CBE group. I think that she must have given your number as a reference (if the original creditor from whom she has taken the debt has asked her for a reference), based on which the collection agency is calling you up. _________________ Keep in touch

I think that Carol is right. You need not worry as the debt is not in your name and the collection agency is not calling you up for the loan. In fact they are looking for your niece. When they call you up the next time you can tell them that she has never stayed with you in that address. But if they still call you up and disturb you, just file a complaint with the BBB and the State AGs office. _________________ All the Best

Thanks Carol and Justin. I appreciate your responses. I know they were not calling abt. my credit, as I just checked my report and it is excellent and with no irregularities. My niece did not list me as a reference, which is why I am curious as to how CBE got my #.

Just send a "CEASE AND DESIST" letter. They can't call, nor write, nor call people you know, nor report you to credit bureaus without a lawyer agreeing with YOU. Get a sample of a CEASE AND DESIST letter online. Send all envelopes back unopened and RETURN TO SENDER. Never talk to them. If they have reported you to the credit bureau, you can write a paragraph that will be put on your credit report to defend yourself. It takes alot of money to sue you or garnish your wages. If you insist on talking or writing , they will assume the debt is valid. ALWAYS tape them when you talk on the phone (if you feel the need to talk) and save all messages they leave. Record times they called. They can't after 9pm. Check online for the rules collection agencies must abide by. Most likely if you say "Do I have your permission to record this?", they will freeze or be really nice. Then you say "This is your legal notice not to call me anymore." That is enough. They can't call you anymore.

I always thought sending a cease and desist put a case in legal standing and that the collector would be then more inclined to sue you? I have also seen them file a summons and after you reply they never gfet the date set leaving it to longer over your head forever since by filing it stops the SOL.

Great news, I got the results of my transunion dispute, they have deleted this entry on CBE on my report and are willing to contact anyone from the last two years to update them also. I am so relieved, this was gonna stay on my report till 2015, I have been paying direct tv directly, never made a payment to these people. They said that as soon as it was paid off they would update it to paid, but it would stay on the negative side of my report.
I called transunion directly and made this request over the phone, I got the results in about 10 days, so don't listen to the first thing they tell you, find another route.
I paid the bill in full today to direct tv, so that this group would not have the opportunity to report on my credit report again. Finally, something has worked out in my favor in this credit building. _________________ Goodnatured,

Excellent news Good Natured! From my iinderstanding of your post CBE will be deleted completely and only the direct tv bill will stay on your report on the negative side? Did you try for a pay for delete from the original creditor? In any case it is still great news. I see you are continuing to work diligently on your credit. GOOD for you! keep it up.
