Lesson learned

I got a phone call today from a collection agency that want to offer me a settlement for my cellular phone bill, He was really insistant that I owed the bill. I told him the contract was up and that bill was paid off and I have the paperwork to prove it. He still said that he could make me a good deal. I said, why the hell would I pay a bill that was already paid off. I asked him for a fax number.

I dug and dug and found the completed contract and faxed it to them. I tried to call and see if they got it and they were no longer interested in my time, I called three times and still could not get through to the girl who called me. Oh well, I guess they no longer wanted to talk to me if they could get not get any money from me.

Now I have to look and see if it is on my credit report, did not see it there before, so I don't think it was there.

keep your receipts.

Wow I would have been really angry. Are they showing up on your credit report and if so are they showing up as paid? Hopefully sending them this contract and proof you have paid the bill will get rid of them once and for all. I think you should report them to the atty. generals office. I would imagine they would probaly pull this on someone else and maybe get them to pay an already paid bill. Do you plan on doing anything about this?

Shows settled and paid, I was a little irritated that they would not take my calls, I am going to wait till monday and ask for a supervisor, I want to make sure that they annotate my file as paid, cause I sure the hell don't want them to sell it off to another company and have them calling me too.

It should have never went into this status in the first place, idiots at the wheel. My main point of this post is to have the old shoe boxes around and through the reciepts in them, this one was paid off may 2007 and it was a pleasure faxing it to them, lol.

I don't blame you. I would be angry, too. ESPECIALLY when you faxed them proof, seems like they no longer wanted to 'converse' with you. CA's can be sneaky...I'll tell you that.

I think it is down right ignort of them, they would be calling me phone off the hook if they thought they could get a dime out of me, it is really irritating. I just don't want them selling it off to another collection agency and have to deal with them. I know they sell the debts off that they can not collect on, they sell them in a group package, so mine could easily be tucked into a package and then I would be bugged by another one.

That would really make me angry but how are you to stop something like this? I wonder if you still have the documantation to the origianl creditor that may have a phone number on their that you can use. I would call the Original creditor since it is obvious that this is where the mistake began and ask them why they sold a paid debt. I would threaten to report them to the better business bureau and atty generals office if they do not take care of the problem. If it was paid then they had no right to sell it. I bet this is a small glimpse into the life of ID fraud..imagine what those people go through.

Seems like CA's don't give up trying to get ahold of us...but, when WE try and call them ( to PROVE they are wrong..) they sure don't wanna listen, do they?

I did file a report with the attorney generals office and the better business bureau, I am really tired of the original creditors too, someone buys them out, like AT&T bought this company out, cellular one. Well apparently they just gathered up some old bills and sold them off. I wonder how many people will get the same phone call that I got and were forced to pay a bill that was already paid.

Can I ask a question ( not saying this 'meanly'..just curious.) How were you FORCED to pay it, GN? When I was reading the posts,on this thread, did I miss something? Did you go to court over this?

I do n ot think she went to court over this SD. I am pretty sure she paid a debt settlement or paid the bill before it switched companies. They (the debt collectors) in this case are just trying to collect on a paid debt..kind of like they do when a debt is past SOL. She is paid so the only thing she really has to deal with is these companies seeing they do not have any legal rights to collect on this debt and then keep selling it. This is why I suggested maybe she get a hold of the person or comapny she originally paid the debt to.

It was paid to the original creditor, so no one should have been collecting on it. I had the paperwork to prove it

OK. So now you need to call the original creditor. I would imagine somewhere on that paperwork there has to be a contact number. They are not allowed to sell a settled debt. Let whomever you speak to know that they have sold a debt that was alreadt paid and that you have been harassed by collection agencies since they turned this debt over. Let them know that you will contact the atty generals office and Better Business Bureau if they do not correct their error. Maybe even going ahead and calling them will help get you advice on your legal standing.
