Two collection agencies trying to collect on same debt

Hi,

I have two collection agencies trying to collect on the same debt. Both post different amounts, but their start dates are about a month or two apart.

I want to pay it quickly to get rid of it to improve my score, but I don't want to have to pay twice for something I should only have to pay for once. Also, I have a debt from an old cell phone I shut off from 2003. Apparently, after I called the company to cancel the service, they never bothered to cancel it, and there's a $1000 bill attached to the account. How do I dispute that now that it's in collections?

What should I do :?:

Ok..just curious here. How can 2 DIFFERENT CA's have the 'ownership' of the same debt? I've never seen this done,..but, is it possible? Now......what if the OP does send letters to both of them and they BOTH verify it? (Just a wild thought I'm having, I guess).

Yes it is very possible for two agencies to attempt to collect the same debt. Is it legal? Not sure. How it happens? Not quite sure of that either. I have just seen this happen many times as well as duplicate collection accounts (as well as the original account) show up on consumer's credit reports.

If you care serious about paying the debt off and since there is confusion about who you actually owe, I would negotiate with the original creditor and cut out the middle man. Ask for a reduction and the removal of the negative item from your report.

As far as the 2003 cell phone bill. Be careful with this one it has been almost 7 years and will fall off soon. By paying off this debt now, you will reactivate it on your credit report. The date of last activity will be the date of the payment and time for reporting will start over from that date instead of the 2003 date - possibly lowering your score.

I don't know how CA's can do that, LEGALLY. Anyway...yep..the 'fall off' date.............if the debt does NOT come off your CR, by the 'fall off' date, you can dispute it with the CB's. Usually it will be removed. SOL?....if you start paying on it, the Statue of Limitations will start again. So..the CA CAN try and sue you if SOL starts over.

I don't think it is "legal" I just think somewhere in the paperwork process, one CA sells to another and to another etc... but keeps trying to collect until the "ink dries" hoping for a collection.

I do know that only one collection for the original amount can be on your credit at one time, whether it is the original creditor or one of the CA's. The others have to bow out if the account is disputed and only the 'rightful' owner of the account can report.

That's why I always suggest to negotiate with the original credit if possible. Unfortunately some won't but it is worth a shot.

1. there is a federal statute of limitations on telecom that is 2 years.

2. it may belegal to have more than one agency "assigned" which is different from owning. doesn't really matter it will sort itself when you send the DV that Aaron suggested

3. have you run your credit lately? why is an 03 debt reporting?

I saw a post mentioning your site on one forum asking something about buying email lists.

I would personally recommend that you consider using a Yellow Pages scraper such as Ivy's B2B Leads Miner Yellow Pages Scraper.

I cannot find the link but you can google it.

I am using it for generating my own B2B leads and it is so much cheaper than buying your own lists so don't waste your money on pre-made lists.

Anyway mate, I hope this helps.

Take care and best of luck with your business!
