Credit Checks for Apartments

I have a question... my boyfriend and I are starting to look at apartments together. My credit score is 530 and I have a couple of old utility bills on my credit report. I was just curious if anyone knew what is looked for on a credit report in terms of renting an apartment and whether my credit might hinder us from getting approved for one? I live in CT, make descent money, at the same job for 2 & 1/2 yrs and also have a reference from my previous landlord where I resided for 3 & 1/2 yrs. I know that no one would know for sure, but just curious other people's thoughts, experiences, and/or opinions? I don't even know if I am posting in the right spot, I am just curious...

Thanks so much!!

Well...........I live in an apt, too. I've lived here for 8 years, so far. When I applied, the Landlord DID do a credit check. What she was looking for was outstanding utility bills, anything 'oustanding' on PAST rent from another Landlord, etc. Hope this advice helps.

My husband and I just applied for a new apartment. They did a credit check and because our credit is not so good they are requiring one and a half months rent for a deposit. Instead of just one month's rent. We're also in Connecticut.

Sd chargers is right here. They definately do a credit check and utilities are looked at. Usually though like Kristie said the worse your score the higher the security deposit.

Yep..I live in low-income apartments. They are VERY nice ones..the County owns them and the maintance is kept up pretty well. The Housing Authority ('landlord') do a Credit check to see if you owe 'outstanding' utilities. I DO know of some people who couldn't 'qualify' because they owed uitily bills somewhere else. And..FIREYONE is correct...this ALL depends on what your deposit would be.

I did it AGAIN! i KEEP FORGETTING TO LOG IN BEFORE i POST!

I live in an apartment in CT and I know my complex looks at your credit, Your income (you have no make atleast 28k per adult) and then references. I'm sure with your old land lords reference you could get an apartment. Just remember in Ct they cant ask you for more then 2 months deposit but, you can offer more. Also, landlords are required to pay you intrest on that money. The exception being if you are late a month on your rent they can keep the intrest...unless they charge you a late fee, then they cant keep the intrest.

Where I live is a 'college' town. Right in the middle of it, is a University. ALOT of the Lanlords, around here have ;hiked' up the rent, because of the college students damaging properties, etc. Just the past few years, Landlords ( that rent to Universtity Students) are REALLY cracking down on looking at Credit Reports before they rent to anyone. I've known a few people who ere 'denied' housing ( not talking Dorms, etc) because they had some 'issues' with their Credit.

I think that you will find these days that more and more landlords will be looking at CRs of possible tenents. While the large rental companys might have rules that are written in stone in regards to accepatble credit scores. I think that you will find that most people who own a second home etc are more accepting of low scores due to various life issues.

I agree. I think alos alot of times landlords do get stuck with unpaid rent and bills. I can not say that I blame them for checking reprots. I use to have a relative living with me. I never charge any rent just asked him to pay the defference in the bill hikes and extra food. In the end I was paying for him to live here. He would pick up a few non essential groceries but use three times that amount. When the electric spiked to a higher level he moved out and I was left paying all the extras. People these days can barely afford to pay their opwn way let alone someone elses. You hate to say no to someone but you also can't say yes especially if their report isn't too favorable cause then you take the chances af removing food from your own table. Hope this doesn't sound cruel. It isn't meant to.

I think that the landlords perform credit checks to ensure that we pay the utility bills timely. If our utility bills are outstanding, they do not want to take the risk and charge a few months rent as deposit. The more outstanding are the bills, the more is the deposit value.

Hi Patience
Since neither you nor your boy friend have a credit history, it is very difficult to get a apartment at a low rate. I don't find any way out for you. But try and find out a apartment with low rent and low deposit. At the same time try and get a secured credit card from your bank and start building a new credit history by making monthly utility payments with the card and repaying it on time to ease future requirements.

Hi patience
Since you do not have a credit history, you can try and find out any of your friends or family members with a good credit history and rent the apartment in their name under the condition that you will be making the monthly payments of rent on time. If you can get somebody with a good credit history you can get an apartment with a low security deposit. However, it is very difficult to find a person who will be willing to offer you to live in an apartment rented in his/her name because if you fail to pay the rent on time, his/her credit score will be greatly affected.

my sons is over 18 and their credit is preventing me from getting an apt. will i ever be able to find an apt.

What is the reason your sons credit is affecting your ability to get an apartment? Can you please elaborate and give more details so someone can help you.

Once you post the details someone will be along to help you.

Did you co-sign on your sons apartment or another loan? If so this could keep you from getting approved for an apartment. If this is the case your son or you would need to get the items that are effecting your report taken care of. It would then still take some time to get your score to come back up. You do not know any private renters do you? Some people will buy homes and rent them out with out credit checks but it would be more likely to be a private deal...maybe one listed in your local paper.

I'm wondering that myself......how is you SON'S credit affecting YOU? In the apt that I live in they do a Credit Check. The only reason why to see if I had any 'oustanding' utility bills (elec, gas, etc). However....I live in an apt complex that belongs to the Housing Authority.

Must be a co sign situation, that is the only way that his credit could affect hers.

Sat, 12/12/2009 - 15:05 Permalink

I would look on your CR and see WHY this is a 'negative' thing for you. Or..if not a 'negative' thing, maybe you just CAN'T get an apt, right now, because TOO much credit would be 'extended' to you. Does this make sense?

Im wonder how far back is an apartment complex allowed to go back to check your rental history?

Tue, 08/03/2010 - 07:49 Permalink

Hi Shydi,

Yes, apartments and landlords do check your credit for letting you borrow services. If you have bad credit you may not get a home or apartment. However, different apartments have different requirements. Thus, you will have to check out the various options available.

Thanks,

Aaron

I have been looking for apartments to rent from and they all do credit checks the ones that don't are run down places where i live up here in Idaho. But i may have one of my friends use their credit to get into a place. Its hard cause i have student loans and medical bills on my credit. Lucky my car is paid off and my utilities are not in collections

I think alot more landlords are doing credit checks..not just looking for specific items, but,,mainly looking to see if the person is being responsible and making payments on bills, etc. I believe, on one of the above posts, I said I had said I lived in an apt complex. I no longer do. However...the apt complex (owned by the county now) looks at everything on credit (past due bills, etc). They even look at your credit score. Just seems like the 'world' is 'labeling' people by a number now a days.

I recently applied at this apartment complex, they said they have to do a credit check. So I paid my fee, she sent me an email stating that my credit is conditional and that its up to the owners to decide. So im still waiting for a response. What I want to know is doesn't hurt your credit score when they check it. And I asked her for a copy of my report since she checked my score but i haven't Hurd back from her its been two days.
