I paid a debt after it went to collections. Of course the item remains on my credit report as having gone to a collection agency but is paid. Is there anything I can do at this point to get this item off my report?

I found myself in the same situation, I paid off three cards and they still remain on my report under the negative column. I tried to dispute them but it came back that the debts were verified. I hope someone comes in here soon and gives you a good answer so I can attempt it too.

Actually what happens is that once the unpaid debt has been listed in the credit report, it stays there for seven years. Now if you want to pay it off and get it removed from the listing, you should have asked your CA for PDL agreement before you pay off the debt and got it in writing as a proof. However, if you have already paid off the debt, the CAs have no incentive to remove them and in fact at the same time they cannot be forced to delete it. All that you can do is to request the CA to delete the listing and wait for their response.

I agree, I don't think they have any incentive to remove it, once you pay it off you are stuck! The letter to them sounds like a good suggestion though, it is worth a shot.
