Before I ask my question, I wanted to say I've been trying to fix my fiance's credit, and have had a lot of success with pay to delete letters. Out of 4 attempts: 2 agreed to delete, 1 said they had no record of an account with him so they would just go ahead and delete it (What? Okay.), and only 1 said "it is illegal to remove items from credit reports" (right, lol). I also semi-disputed a judgement (we just asked for verification to know what it was for because he had no idea) and it got deleted because the court never responded :D
Just thought I would say that for anyone who thinks they don't have a chance!
Anyway, after all my hard work, my amazingly forgetful fiance forgot to pay a bill he had at a lumber yard. So, they sent it to collections. It is only 100 bucks so we have no problem paying it, but should we try to pay the original creditor? Do we have to specifically ask for them to take it back from collections or will it just automatically happen if they allow us to pay them directly?

Call the lumber yard and try the pay for delete there. Chance are they will be glad to get their money. I would explain the simple forgetful error. It is always better to pay the original creditor. However, if the original creditor (OC) has given the collection authority to a CA, then you should deal with the collection agency. To be able to know this properly, I think you should call the OC or ask for debt validation. In this way you will come to know who holds the right to collect on the debt.
