Subject: Old judgment on report - Can they take away property?

In 1993 I had a judgment against me for a credit card debt. I responded to the summons and later on my wages were garnished. But suddenly my mom was taken ill and as my job involved travel I had to stay back at home. So no job no garnishment. But, the judgment has stayed on my report from then. I do not have any property except a car and house of my own both paid off. So can they take away my property to pay off a judgment so old? I have just enough savings to run the household and cannot afford to pay them. Any advice will be of help.

Hi betty,

A judgment can stay on your report for 7 years, after it is satisfied. I feel even the credit bureaus will be reluctant to remove an unpaid judgment, if you dispute. You should contact your creditors and set up a payment plan with them. It is sometimes possible to reduce the debt amount by 40-60%. The percentage of debt that is reduced, will depend on your ability to convince your creditor
