federal collections account

Hello,
I received a letter last month from a collections agency saying I owe 4,499.00 in tuition from a university I attended, NOT a student loan. I called and wanted to settle this or set up a payment plan but the lady on the other end said I could not settle because it's a federal account. She also told me it was delinquint for 2 years even though this was the first letter I've ever received, and that I should do something soon because it was going to auction in a few days. I'm confused... Is the agency selling the debt to another agency? I was in the process of trying to find a lawyer after that but my mother told me not to worry so much about it and see what happens. I checked my credit report a week before it happened and again today and it's not there, nor is there an inquiry from the collection agency. Can they decide to put it on my credit report? Any feedback is much appreciated!!

Welcome to the forums!
I think, it’s a scam. You can make a written request to the CA for a debt validation letter via certified mail with a return receipt request. If they don’t reply, then forward them a C&D letter. After that, if they are still trying to contact with you, then file a complaint against them to the State Attorney General or FTC.
