Subject: how are debts validated?

I was just wondering, how much proof should I need before paying a collection agency? I talked to a lady over the phone and she said she'll send me a letter regarding my debt before I can make payments and all she sent me is a letter stating

my original creditor
my account #
the breakdown of my debt
confirmation (without proof) that they are authorized agents acting on behalf of the named client

is this enough validation?

I think all the requirements in your post is enough but many other company wants more documents...
