Rebar vs Windshield

Submitted by goodnatured on Sat, 11/17/2007 - 12:13

Hey guys, yesterday was payday, so I stepped out of the office for about 20 minutes to get money out of the bank to pay bills. Well on the way back another vehicle going the opposite direction hit a piece of rebar, concrete reinforcement bar on the road, it came up in the air and came directly at me. I thought it was coming through. Well, it hit my hood and put a hole in my windshield, that has now spidered, so I have to replace my windshield. My stupid insurance company which I have not ever file a claim on is saying that I don't have glass, it will cost me about $250 to fix it. I am still having them come out and look at the windshield and the dent in the hood, anything over my $500 deductible they will give me to have it fixed.

New car, only had it a year, just got it inspected on Wednesday. Should have stayed in the office and said the heck with those bills, lol.

I was really mad yesterday, everyone at work said "did you chase here down?" to me it wasn't her fault, she did not even realize that she hit it, taffic kept on moving. I would not have known that I hit it.

I thought it was coming through the windshield, I was really shaken up.

Anyway, happy friday to me.

Glad to hear that you are okay, that is the important thing, I know you sound disappointed about the damage, but vehicles can be fixed. Wait for the adjuster, you may get enough to fix your windshield, you would be amazed what vehicle labor is these days. If it below your deductable and they say it will inflate your rates, cancel the claim so you don't have to pay more on insurance. Unfortunately, insurance is one of those things that we don't find out what coverage we really have until we need it, right? I have assumed that I was covered in things only to find out that I wasn't, I know it is frustrating. Make sure you get all the information needed.

Ok, I am thinking a have a wammy on my head, I took the pick up truck to pick up the boards to build our child a bed frame and lost the brakes, brake line snapped. This is two different vehicles, two different days and two completely different destinations. Making me leary on driving this week.

Good...does your manufactuer provide any kind of assistance when you bought your vehicle. for instance, we bought a toyota scion (new at the time) and they give you all kinds of bonuses through those contracts. someone sat down with us for an hour and explained and i'm thinking glass was one of them though i had to look. yeah we may have had to pay a little extra, like if our tires go out on the road they're replaced at no charge. things like that. I don't blame you for being leery.
very sorry to hear about your truck too!!!!!!! jeeez have you talked to anyone about those? anyone in the family able to help you with the brake line? i'm kinda dumb when it comes to cars so not sure how to replace a brake line or if someone other than a repair shop can. let us know how you're doing.

We will replace the brake line our selves, it is no big deal, just splice a piece where the hole is, we did the gas lines a few years ago, it is not a major deal, it just surprised the crap out of me thats all. I was thinking about the wammy deal pretty seriously there. LOL. I was gonna take the truck to work on friday to buy the mattress, so glad I didn't, I would have been up the creek without a paddle. Today, I called my husband and made him come drive it home, he can do all the down shifting and using the rear brake thing. I always picture the worse you know, like flying through an intersection or something.

I will replace the windhshield after winter as long as everything stays down towards the bottom or when the local glass shop runs a special. I did not realize this glass thing with my insurance, I have only been with them for about 2 years, I always carry glass coverage, so this insurance was supposed to be comparable to my last, guess I found out the hard way. I will check into the toyota thing though, it is a corolla. thanks

Sounds like you need to park the vehicles and leave the driving to someone else for awhile, hee, hee. Just kidding, I think this was just coincidence, I don't think anyone put a wammy on you. I think it is great that you guys can change your own brake lines, that will save you some money. You are lucky to have that talent and the equipment to do it. I guess the windshield is a different story huh, I would think you would want to take that type of job to the shop that does it right? Especially with the weather getting cold and all.

Glad to hear that you're ok first of all. secondly, it's very good that you know how to replace the break lines yourselves, one because it saves you money in labor and 2 you KNOW who did it and that it will be done right! i'm disappointed that your insurance rep didn't explain the coverage to you when you switched over your insurance from the older vehicle to the newer one. ours did, we never asked she went item by item line by line explaining what coverage we had and that included glass. I hope that the windshield holds out, it should toyota puts out a good product. glad hubby knows alternative ways of driving for you :)

hey debtstinker, that sounds like you, did you forget to sign in? Girl, hit the logout button and then log in again, if that isn't you sorry, but it sure sounds like you, you just spoke about a new car earlier in the post.
We will take care of things, just a few hundred dollars that I did not plan on spending this time of year. Fortunately, I have christmas done early, have all my coal in for winter, my utilities are paid, so I should be good, I think I have the cable left, which I have enough to cover it. I will just be broke till next payday. I have been there before, hubby is off for hunting so I will save a few bucks there on lunches. We will be fine. Thanks for your concern.

Debtstinker, did you forget to sign in? It is okay, seems like everyone knows your style enough to guess it is you, hee hee, isn't that funny to you. I think it shows in just a short time how well we get to know one another. Sign in so you can get those pennies! They all add up.

I sure hope so...whammies are never good especially at this time of the year. yeah da...that's cool that people know my style of writing and communicating. very interesting to me since i studied communications in school and typing can sometimes be so inpersonal...but not here, these forums are great. Good, glad you're doing ok!!!!

I think we all develop our own personal style and our words even in print can convey tone. The people that know us best can recognize our tone in our writing, I bet this is forum could guess about 5 of its writers if we did the guest thing and then said, "Who Am I?" I think that would be fun and then when we guess who it is that person would pm someone else, but not be able to guess, let the others and so on and so on, what do you guys think, how well do we know one another. Does someone want to start? should be interesting. Remember don't sign in if you are the original poster.

Wed, 11/21/2007 - 07:08 Permalink

Just your playful attitude Laura, although I thought it was debtstinker there for a minute, but then a closer look at the writing and the character behind it, told me it was you. LOL

ok, now I think you have to pm someone and tell them to be guest, right, if I am understanding this game right.

all done Da, thanks for asking, hubby got the breaks on and then much to my surprise went and picked up the mattress for me so I did not have to go into town on black friday, bless his heart. The only thing I need to do is take all the stuff to goodwill and I won't need the truck for a while.

Friday on the way to work a car pulled out in front of me. My brakes on my car got a great function test. In the passenger seat was an elderly gentleman, who probably did not hear my brakes screaming, just waving hello. Ok people, don't ask someone who can not see if there is traffic coming, THEY CAN NOT SEE IT, till it is right upon them. I about had a heart attack, I blew it off and went to work and nothing has happened since. So I am thinking that I am free of my whammy, however, I am more alert than ever, LOL.

Sat, 11/24/2007 - 13:48 Permalink

Good, I am glad that your wammy has left, lets pray it don't come back. You have had your share.

Sat, 11/24/2007 - 18:55 Permalink

hopefully this will be a better week, I am certainly more alert, don't know why people are in such a hurry, must be the holiday season shopping or something. Just wish they would be a little safer.

I guess they never faced such situation. I dont understand why people do not learn from others mistakes. Does one has to go through the trauma to know it?

Tue, 11/27/2007 - 05:21 Permalink

I think to make it personal to themselves they have to go through it themselves Laura, I know that people genuinely feel for others but trauma is a learning experience that once one has survived or experienced it they seem different in some way.
