Hi,

You can send this sample letter to a credit bureau requesting to remove inquiries from your credit report. Make sure that you use fax or certified mail in order to ensure your creditor receives it promptly. Here’s the letter:

Sample letter for inquiry deletion

Your Name __________
Your Address __________
Your Phone # __________

Credit Bureau's Name ________________
Credit Bureau's address ________________

Date __________

Dear Sir or Madam,

RE: Request for verification

I am requesting that you verify certain items reported on my consumer credit report. Certain unauthorized inquiries have been reported on my file and I want them deleted immediately. These companies have never provided me with any services, nor have I ever given them authorization to check my credit report. As it is your responsibility to maintain reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy, you must either verify these companies had authorization to check my credit or remove these items within 30 business days.

I have enclosed the copies of my Social Security and Drivers’ license cards to verify my identity. Do not contact me for that information as I am providing it now.

Your help and cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

The inquiries are listed as follows:

COMPANY NAME DATE (List the names of creditors reporting inquiries)

Sincerely,

Your Signature ________________

Understand that all a company needs to make an inquiry is a "permissable business purpose". That ~unfortunately~ includes collections.

The deal is, most collection inquiries result in the opening of a collection account. You are better served to work to delete the account, THEN the inquiry, based on it's illegitimacy, as the associated account was unverifiable, and thus deleted.

Another option would be to "merge" the inquiry with the account, and THEN delete the account. (The listing of the inquiry and the account constitutes an illegal duplication of information on a single account.)

Subject: Experian does not investigate/remove inquiries after 50 days

Posted on Thu Mar 12, 2009 10:42 pm

I sent certified letter to Experian to dispute inquiries. 50 days later I had no response. So I sent another certified letter saying that according to FCRA etc., they are required to remove the inquiries if they do not investigate or receive a response within 30-45 days. They wrote back and said they were part of my credit history. I phoned and they said they are not required to investigate inquiries. They just do not care. Now I understand I have to take legal action.
Is there any other recourse? This is illegal and wrong.
Thanks.

You should send a letter to the inquirer asking them either to verify your authorization or to remove the listing from your credit report. You can also threaten them that you will complain against them to the State Banking Commission if they fail to remove the unauthorized listing from your report. The inquirers mostly remove the listing from the credit report if they cannot verify your authorization. You can find sample letters if you visit the link letters of credit.
