Help! I accrued a debt in the UK. I moved back to the US about a year and a half ago. The credit card company first sent this to a UK company who called me at 4 in the morning several times and harassed me almost senseless. I got letters and everything. A lawyer advised me to just ignore them, as they probably weren't licensed in the US.

Now, I've got a call from ACS International, who my research shows might actually be a licensed collection agent in the US. They left a messagae and a return phone number in the UK.

I thought all they could do on a UK debt was to get a judgemt against me in the UK. That was OK, as I had nothing there and couldn't pay it. I don't know if this new company has any standing to sue me in the US, and if I should just come up with the money somehow and pay it. They did leave a UK number. I don't want to acknowledge the debt to these people. Should I wait and see if I get a letter from this company?

What should I do????

Thanks for any help.

Carrie

You can make a written request to the ACS International for a debt validation letter via certified mail with a return receipt request. If they send you a valid proof, then you can negotiate with them. You may try to arrange a better repayment plan with them. But it depends on their discretion whether or not to accept your proposal.
