If I want want a debt validation from a collection agency, do I have to write them the letter myself and ask them to remove it from the reporting agencies, or can I mail the reporting agency itself and say that "I dont know so and so collection agency" and have the the agency remove it?

If I ask the agency, do they request the debt validation of the collection agency, or do I have to do it?

Requesting a debt validation from the CA and the credit reporting agency, are two diferent things. You can send the CA a dv letter, and also disput any items on your credit report yourself. They will investigate the items and get back with you on what they find. If it is in error, they will remove it..KAren

This is a vital step that must be taken whenever you are contacted by a collection agency. It is a letter sent by certified mail with return receipt requested. It must be sent within 30 days of the first letter sent by the CA(collection agency). The collection agency must validate the debt before they can list this debt on your credit report, or call your house all day.
