I am 23 years old, and I live in San Antonio Texas.

My situation is I do have alot of credit card debt that stems back from when I was 16 or 17. My mom opened a credit card in my name and she actually ran up 10-20k debt in my name.

I regret not taking care of it back then, and now I'm not sure where to begin in trying to get it repaired.

What would you guys recommend?

Is it paid off, or is it still open?

Anybody got advice? I never signed for the cards or anything. Is it too late to dispute all the charges?

So did your mom volunteer to pay any of it? Did you ask for debt validation? If you cannot afford to pay the amount you could try and negotiate a payment option with your creditors for an amount you can afford. In short seek for loan modification and see if your creditors will co operate. Pay off the debt in a manner you can afford. Talk to your creditor first and be honest with them. They would rather get a payment than not get anything at all.

My mom got a credit card in my name when I was 17 or 18 & I just left my hometown & moved to Cali. (I later found out that, had all the bills sent to her work mailing address and actually told she was my mom when they called. She made a couple payments on a (orginally) 1200.00 debt and then quit paying. I had NO idea. By the time a CA based collections office contact me, the debit had changed hands 5 times & 3 years had passed. I wonder why I could not get approved for a credit card (this is why I now check my credit report often), I assumed it was b/c I had no credit. One of my employers provided a "pre-paid legal plan" to employees. After an unsucessfull 2 year attempt to obtain info on the acct. & getting NO-where w/the orginal creditor & collections companies, I contacted the pre-paid legal company. They sent a letter in my behalf to the creditor & agencies. The creditor sent me a form for notorized signatures. I returned it & 6-8 months later the debit was cleared of my report. My mother stole my idnty & I could (and probably should have) pressed charges. when i asked her about it she denied it but the creditor told me everything I need to know.....Christmas gifts for us were put on the card.
Let me know if i can help.

Well it is nice to know that you were able to get out of this situation finally. Maybe your mom did this in good faith but it backfired on you. I ask everybody to keep checking their credit report regularly to avoid hassles like this.

Thanks for the info Tscorpio, I ordered all my credit reports to be mailed to me, and then I am going to take them and file a police report. Now I also want to get a credit card under my name and pay it off every month, to start building positive credit, anyone have any recommendations on where I could possibly get approved, even if its for $50 or $100?
