Well there are several red flag signals that you can watch out for.

Like if a credit repair company does not tell you of your rights and what legal actions you yourself can take, it might not be a legitimate company.
Check out a credit repair company at the Better Business Bureau before you can do business with them.
If the credit repair company advises you to not contact a credit bureau directly it might be a scam.
Don't pay for services upfront. Check if they are keeping their promise and then think about payment.
You must be provided with a copy of your consumer rights.
If you smell a rat, you may cancel a contract with any credit repair company within 3 business days beginning from the date you signed this contract.
