Can two companies collect on the same debt?

I have two entries on my credit report both with different amounts attached to them. One that I am being garnished for through a law firm and the other is states it is listed at a collection agency in texas. I was evicted from an apartment complex called maple ridge which is on my CR. Then the same debt is listed under Tiffany Gardens but is being collected on by a law firm for which I am being garnished by. So Tiffany Gardens bought Maple Ridge and then Brownstone bought Tiffany Gardens. Brownstone also stated that Maple Ridge cannot be found. They took all their records with them and have disappeared. What do I do in this type of situation?

Was the account sold off to the other company? They both can not collect but they both may appear on your credit report. I have one that started out with providian, they was sold to a collection agency, and then another, so it is reported three times with three different names. Only one collected the amount to close it out. No matter how many are there they only count as one as long as they are for the same debt.

Hope this makes sense.
