Update the money I paid the IRS for taxes I was suppose to have owed because a credit card company wrote off $4000.00 I disputed it with the IRS because the only account I had with the credit card company was only $1100.00. So how could they write off $4000.00. Well any way the IRS investigated the situation and sent me my money back. So I'm guessing the company was cheating on their books. I never owed anything. And if it wouldn't have been for my credit report I could have never proved this. It is very important to keep an eye on your report. It's a lot of crooked things that are happening anymore.

Good to know that the irs would actually take the time to investigate, many times people will not challenge these big agencies.

Thank you for sharing this information, it may inspire others to go after what is theirs and not tolerate companies reporting bogus information.

If it hadn't of been for me having to give them my sons Christmas money. I might not have. I knew from the beginning something wasn't right but had no way of proving it until I got my credit report. Then I was so mad and determined to get to the bottom of it. I really didn't think of them as being the IRS. But yes I am shocked they investigated myself. And I have to praise them for that.

Debra, Is this an account that was currently opened and paid on or one that was defaulted on and they made the amount higher? I am glad you did not sit back and let them take advantage of you. See these companies get write off on their own taxes when someone does not pay a debt ..it is considered as a write off. I am anxious to know if it was an account in good or bad standing.
Always check your report. I have a couple ready to fall off and I will pull mine when the date comes to be sure they take it iff. Two more and a few months to go and I am back to perfect credit. Log wait.

I't was an account that was in good standing. I borrowed money on a second mortgage and they were included. So they got paid the $1100 I owed them then tried to write off $4000 and leave me paying taxes on it. I would love to know how many other people they have done this way and gotten by with it.

Thats ridiculous. Did you have any paperwork from the second mortgage to show you paid them off? I would never do business wth this company again. Now I will say that you should hold onto any letters from the IRS and that credit report just in case this would ever come up again. You never know and I would not take the chance. I have seen plenty of posters come on here saying how they paid a company off years ago and then they come back to recollect and the person does not have any proof because they threw everything away not thinking they would need it again.
I am wondering if that company who tried to write off the $4,000 deleted the account all together so it does not end up getting sold to a different collector. I would call and ask them.

I actually had no idea where mine were so I got a copy from the second mortgage company. I believe after they found out the IRS is on to them I don't think they would have the ----- to try it again. But I will keep my paper work just in case.

Hey debra

This is good :) Actually, things like this takes a little time to get settled. There maybe other too who have had the same experience but had to wait longer than you did but still got the false debts removed. I must say you are lucky it didn't take you long. However, irs has done its duty and not neglected your case. Actions like this help build the trust of people and the good thing is there still are companies who would like to work honestly.

Yes it is a good thing. Does it really take the IRS a long time to straighten things like this out? I relize they have alot on their plates but issues should eb able to be moved along without taking forever. I wonder what happens to the company who turned in the debt as unpaid. Will they face any consequences or fines?

Hi everyone the IRS told me to begin with it would take up to three months. But as you can see it took no time. I'm assuming when they investigated it the cc company had no way of providing them with the info they needed. But I am waiting on a trans script from the IRS now. They had just mailed the check and nothing else. But since the State needs proof they refunded my money so I don't owe them as well. I had to get one. So after I receive it I will have more detail. And yes it feels good when you have The IRS on your side. As far as who they were not sure if I can repeat that in case they do get charged and I have to go to court or something. But here is a hint it starts with a C

Debra, When you get those transcripts keep a good hold on them. I am glad this all worked out and they were speedy in getting it resolved. Have you asked anyone whether you can come back against the credit card company for what they have done? They held up your refund and caused you a lot of other stress by falsifying information. You could be due money for all this inconvience. I would look into it. Maybe they will see what it feels like to be at the other end.

You know fireyone I never thought about that. I just assumed the IRS would be the one to deal with them. Thanks for the heads up I will call a lawyer and see what they say I can do about them doing this as soon as I get the transcript as my proof. You are right someone needs to let them know that what they have done isn't acceptable. And maybe they will think before they try and pull the same stunt on someone else.

seems like you should be able to file a complaint against them with the fair credit reporting agency and be able to file suit against them, you can sue for any damages that they have caused you.

Have you contacted an attorney yet? If not go to the fair debt collection website and look for a referral form there, these are attornies that are used to dealing with companies that do this kind of practice.

Hi Goodnatured,

Thanks for the info. I got the transcript yesterday. And was telling my mom about trying to do something about what they did but not having any attorney in this area that probably wouldn't take on a company that big. So this will come in handy. Just waiting until after the Holidays. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas!!!

You can file the dispute yourself, when it comes to all the legal mumbo jumbo you just answer it admitted or denied to each of the questions.

Someone here can guide you through the process. If you go to court and win your case does the company or whoever sues you have to reimburse your atty feesif you get one? I was wondering that because how many times do these companies want their fees returned for having hired an atty to sue a person?

I got the transcript the other day and was looking at it. To see if it listed a reason why they returned my money and I can't find it on there any where. It just looks like a copy of my tax return and it has listed where I paid the money and where they sent it back. I'm wondering if that's how it is suppose to be. I was expecting something a little more detailed. Don't know if I would have a case against them with this or not. What do you think?
