Collection listing from unlicensed Collection Agency

I had a collection account show up on my credit report today from a CA that is not licensed to collect in my state(to the best of my knowledge anyway). The debt was validated but I don't believe I have to pay them unless they provide their license info.

So even though they aren't licensed can they still add items to my credit report?

I do not believe an unlicensed debt collector can collect a debt or list it on your credit report. There are however some states that do not require licensing. One of them being PA. I do not know all of them. You could try disputing it upon those grounds with the three credit bureaus.
