I have heard of this happening if you don't pay when they are kids even your kids can take you to court and make you pay. So your weren't notified of a court date? They just decided to garnish your ssdi? It seems like you would have been notified. I guess you could contact the court and see why you weren't notified of a court date. I know when the kids are younger they go by both parents income. Not sure how they come up with what you have to pay since they are grown. I'm sure there is interest that has to be paid as well. I know you have to pay whether you are on ssdi or not just don't know how much. I would just contact the court they should lead you in the right direction I'm sure.

What they did is perfectly legal. Mostly SSDI can not be attached except for child support and federal taxes or loans. It does not matter whether they are grown or not according to the government you still have to pay towards the care of your children. If the other parent collected any type of welfare you would then owe the money to the state that the benefits were collected from. You could try to get them to lower it but they may not if it took them this long to collect.
