Subject: Answer the calls?

I am unemployed, looking with no luck, and no un-employment benefits. I am doing all I can think of, selling plasma and as much around the house as is worth anything, and cannot make my bill payments. Aside from a miracle and I get a job tomorrow, I am at a loss for what to do. My bank accounts are almost dry, and I am afraid to answer the calls from the creditors. Should I, and what should I tell them if I do? I fully intend to start paying again when employed, but I am sure that will not be enough to tell them. I hate being in this position! What should I do?

Hello Sc,

First of all do receive the calls and try to make them understand your situation, the hardships that you are facing. Tell them that you are not trying to escape the debt but is unable to pay only because you are unemployed and with no money to pay the debt.

Though you are trying to get a new job, try to know the unemployment benefits of your state. If it's possible then try to file for the unemployment benefits.

Have you thought of selling the house? That is one more option that you have. But before selling try to find a rental house where you can live.

Hope this helps. Smile

Thanks.

I think it is more important to understand how much you owe, than talk to them. I would assemble your bills.

I know how hard it is with the phone ringing everyday with creditors, when you are out of work and no money coming in. You try to explain your situation and tell them you have no money, they continue to harass you. That is illegal, I believe, and you need to tell them that they need to quit harassing you. They may call less frequently at least and maybe you'll find work and get back on track.

You can force them to stop calling by sending a letter by certified mail stating that it is inconvenient for them to call and that your phone is shared so that it is an invasion of privacy.

However, stopping them from calling will not stop the collection.
