Can a finance company charge off my account after only 2 1/2

My truck is almost paid off. I lost my job and fell behind on the payments. It was reposessed once, I paid fee's and all late payments and got it back. I now only have about 3 payments left and I'm falling behind again. I called them to make arrangements and they told me my account has been charged off. I am only 2 1/2 months late, can they still charge off my account? (because from everything that I have come accross so far, states that they charge off after 180 days) Also, they said that they decided to charge off my account rather than reposessing my vehicle. Do you think they will still repo my truck?
I live in Az but bought truck in Ca.

The person you talked to may not know what they are talking about. they wouldn't charge it off without selling the debt. Send them a letter stating that you need to know who owns this debt. They can repossess, so I would do my best to make arrangements

Hi,

Call the company once again to verify the charge-off or you can send them a letter asking to let you know who actually owns the debt as cinnamngrl has said. And in the meantime try to get hold of your credit report. Check from their if it is reflecting the charge-off and to whom. If the creditor confirms the charge-off again then contact the CA, if you wish to pay the dues to them.
