Subject: How to handle past due from Collection Agency

I am handling this collection debt for an older lady, in TX as a good gesture. She doesn't recall ever receiving a bill from the original debtor, $33. It could have gone to an old address. Charged off in 12/2007. CA's apparently sold to other agencies. Last amount of debt was $233. She doesn't want to pay the full amount. She just wants to make it go away, along with the constant calls. She is willing to offer $116 (which I believe was their settlement offer) with agreement to remove from her credit reports. I want to help her. What are her options? She doesn't want to validate and as a matter of my sanity, I don't want to have to handle all that. What could happen if she doesn't pay this? Thanks Question

Hello Sandals,

If she won't pay what she owes, she can face charges for it. It is always advisable to pay off what you owe. Here, for her the best option is to go for debt validation first. You can try to make her understand the importance of a debt validation. It gives you the chance to get the details of the debt, whether or not you owe it. After the debt validation, she can request the CA for a debt settlement. Attend the calls and tell them that she is willing to pay the debt, after you make her understand the gravity of the situation.
