Hi Lisa,

Can you give more details on your credit? Can you tell whether there were any old collection accounts? Paying off old accounts can lower your score.

Thanks,

Aaron

Hi vfsalinas,

Yes, if you can manage credit on your own, then there is no need to join a credit counseling agency. Managing credit is not that tough. You need to make a list of all your credit cards, loans, and bills, along with the payment dates, and outstanding balances. Maintain on time payments, and tick off the one paid.

Along with these, you also need to set up an emergency fund, which you can use in time of emergencies to pay off your cards, and bills. Another very important thing you should do in credit/debt management is check your credit report at least once in three months.

Thanks,

Aaron

Thanks for the good advice...I have recently started forcing myself to start saving...(for a cruise to the Bahamas) = ) but I do realize I need a general savings plan. Money is tight right now because I am working my way through school and paying off a student loan and paying for two homes...I just need to manage my money wisely and set money aside immediately for savings....I have started considering signing up with my credit card account to receive a copy of my credit report every month since I am working to repair my credit...I love this site, it has been a tremendous help for me...Thanks!

I have not read many good things about credit repair companies on here, where would you go to check it out and see if they are a good company to use or not?

You can choose a good credit repair company by following these steps.

1. Ask them what they have done for their previous clients and ask for evidence to support their claims.
2. Find out whether they charge a reasonable fee.
3. Talk to people who have been with a credit company before and were happy with their services.
4. Ask for their state registration and bond certificates. Verify them with required public information from Secretary of the State.
5. Find out, how long they are in business. If they are in business for long, it means that they have been able to offer good services to people.

In my experience with Credit Repair Co's, (the ones I've dealt with, anyway), they want upfront-fees to "make sure they 'fix' your credit." I actually had a 'repair Co tell me this!! There ratings were good....however......the more I talked to them, the more 'red flags' were coming up. I've learned, from several people, on this Forum, that you CAN repair your own credit. And..you're not paying someone to do it!!

Hi foreverandever,

It is always better to check the reliability of the company (any, may it be a credit repair service, or debt settlement company, or debt consolidation company) in the market, and it's accreditation with the Better Business Bureau.

Again, sometimes all these fails. It can happen that a consumer may be satisfied with the services of that company, while some may not be satisfied with the services of that same company.

Thanks,

Aaron
