Assigned account to a law firm

My nephew is going through severe debt problems. I have agreed to pay off his credit card debt. The original creditor says that he has assigned the account to a debt collection agency. However, the debt collection agency is saying that they have assigned/sold the account to a law firm. Now, I’m utterly confused. Whom should I pay and how much?

Since your nephew's account was finally sold off to the law firm, then you ought to pay the law firm itself.

Welcome to the forums!!!
I think they are scammers. You should ask the collection agency to validate the debt in writing via certified mail with a return receipt request. If they don’t give any reply, then don’t make any payments.
