Closing a checking account if you not on the account

There is a man that closed a checking account at the local bank and took the money. However, he was not on the account and none of the other account holders knew this had happened until after it was done.

The account belonged to the Past Master's of the local Masons and the man that closed the account is the current Master of the Lodge and was not affilated with the Past Masters. The account was not connected to the accounts that the lodge currently has with the bank - it was totally seperate. He announced that he had closed the account and took the four hundred dollars that was in the account. I don't think that is illegal, but we are not sure what to do about it.

ok, so was the account in the organizations name? If so, he would have had recent documentation that he was affiliated with the organization and is probably okay.

Hang out though and see what others have to say, I would think that it is just a situation of updating the signature cards since the master is currently in the position.

If he was not on the account he should not have been able to close the account. If he was not affliated with the agency then the bank in my opinion made an error. How does he account for the four hundred dollars. Either way it would have belonged to an orginaztion and not himself personally. The money should have been turned over.

Did he give any explaination why he did this? I would think he would need the approval of ALL of the members involved, etc.
