Account Numbers

I'm putting together a debt validation letter for an account that is on my Equifax report. The problem is that the complete account number is not on the report. It has X's as placeholders for the remaining numbers. How do I find out the rest of the account number so that I can put this on the letter?

I would contact the Equifax to find out the details. The account number must have been coded for safety reasons. By the way are you sending the validation letter to the bureau? Dispute it first with Equifax then consider validating.

Thanks, I've already disputed the account with Equifax. I called them and they said that I would have to call the OC to get the account number. Seems a bit strange that not even Equifax has any of my full account numbers but can report them.

Once I find out the account number should I send the validation letter to Equifax or the OC? What if there is no collection agency?

Thanks for your help.

You can send a validation letter only if there is a collection agency involved. In case of an OC you can only dispute it with the CB which you have already done. If the OC validates the debt you are liable to pay for the debt to the creditor. So you have to interact with the OC.

Sound's clear?

Thats good info anthony. I didn't relize that you could only send validation letters to collection agencies.

Open your credit report and go on online dispute. This way you gonna see a different credit report with the full acc. numbers ( a full dispute form of your credit file)

Once a collection agency takes over a debt can they change the account number? I seen on my report that the CA listed the original creditor and the same amount (plus $1) but the account numbers are different.
