hard inquires

Hi, I am new here and have just gotten my credit report and score. I saw things on there that I don't think I applied for. The man at Transunion said I had only one hard inquiry but there were about 10-15 inquires. He said the ones such as applying for a credit card is a soft inquiry but on the site it said creditors and lenders are hard inquiries which affect your score. Does any body know which inquiries affect your score and which one's don't.

Also I know the name on the report don't say the name of the credit card. I have one that is First USA and have not ever applied for a card from them. Does anyone know which card that is. Thanks, Vick

Hard iquiries is when you apply for a credit card. Those are the ones that drop your score. You can go to "www.optout.com" and give them your info for all tose soft inquiries. What this does is it keeps people or companies looikg to give credit to an individual from doing it to you. You will notice shortly after thst your postal bax will contain much less credit card applications. I did this and now I do not recieve any and do not see any of those soft inquires on my report.
The First USA account came up as a Bank One account when I googled it.Stop back and check other posters will aslo answer your questions and give you even better info.

Somebody posted that here and I went on there and signed up for it too, I have seen a big difference in all the junk, it really does work.

I wish I had known about it earlier. My junk mail pile had really depleted. I use to go to my mailbox and find it full of all junk. Now there are times I actually have no mail since I opted out. I also like the idea because It keeps temptation away.

Hi Vick
Whenever you check your credit report, it becomes a soft inquiry. A soft inquiry can be done any number of times as it does not affect your credit score. But as soon as a creditor make inquiry in your credit report it becomes a hard inquiry which affects your credit score. A hard inquiry may reduce your credit score by as 10 points and so you should try to remove any unauthorized hard inquiries from your credit report.

Hi Vick
Since you have never applied for First USA credit card, but it still appears in your report means that they have conducted a hard inquiry without your authorization and so it can be removed from your credit report. For this all you need to do is to send a letter to the inquirer asking him to remove the listing from your credit report or prove that they have received authorization from you to make a hard inquiry. In most cases they remove the listing as they cannot verify your authorization. You can find a sample letter from the link http://www.creditmagic.org/letters/credit-inquiry.html

Yeah Me too. That made me chuckle cause are amil goes at so many different times out here in Amish Paradise and I find I am walking to check my mail a little too much. If the box is empty I will walk up again in the evening to recheck. I don't trust the rebel neighbors to leave any mail in overnight.
