You should just pay what you owe! How can you use someone else's money and decide not to pay, leave the country and sleep at night-what is wrong with you all????? In Australia, the statute of limitations on a debt which has been filed with regulators is 12 years. If you have left, don't come back! You don't deserve to live here, no matter what sad story you think you have. You owe a debt to someone. Pay it! |

| they can't chase you if you live and have citizenship in another country. if u were to do a credit on ur country of citizenship, the debt won't show up since it would be from a different country. |

Hi John,
Your bad or good credit will not affect your credit in another country. However, if you leave your country with debt, it may toll. That is, the Statute of Limitations will start ticking whenever you come back in your own country.
Thanks,

Why would you purposely do that? Most people here have come here because they have had an unfortunate turn in times, not intentional.
This is bad, real bad. Don't do it. |

Hi John,
I completely agree with goodnatured. If you really owe the debt, you need to pay it.
Thanks,

Me and the missus have/had debts in the UK totally at least 25-30,000 possibly more. We had no way of paying them back as we where both made unemployed. This was 4 years ago. We are now back on our feet in Australia with minimal debt (lesson learned!).
Since being in Australia i've heard nothing about anyone chasing payments (once my mum in the UK had a call for me, but thats it.)
If you are leaving the country and not coming back like myself and you have no way of paying back debt, wheres the harm? All money I owe is to huge corperations who have no doubt cried themselves to sleep over me *rolls eyes*.
As for being stopped in airports for debt, thats not going to happen in *most* countries although i'd avoid UAE lol |

| It never ceases to amaze me that there are people on these forums providing advice to perennial debters on how they can abrogate their responsibility to pay decent hard working people the money they owe them. What I'd do to them is I'm afraid not printable. |

Hi Me,
Generally speaking, the Statute of Limitations restarts as soon as the person comes back, and starts using his credit. However, whether or not he can be arrested depends on the state laws I believe.
Thanks,

Hi,
My wife and I moved from the UK to Canada a couple of years ago. She had a long term loan she had been paying (before we were married) and in her name only.
after a year of moving she had been paying it and got it from £11k to £8k. as her money was running out (wasnt working in Canada) she called the bank and informed them of her position, as they always advise. They said there was nothing they could do and to call back when she was in arears!!
a year later they have sent letters and finally sent it to a debt agency in the uk, who have sent about 3 letters, although the letters were coming from Hungary and Germany??
We recently received a letter stating that the agency had, or will sell the loan onto a canadian company who they call at the door.
They did say though that she had the option to pay now and get 40% off the amount. Their last offer.
I know its long winded but the question is... Can they legally sell the debt to a Canadian company to collect it.
Nothing Here is in her name either.
I am under impression the UK loan cannot be collected here as she had paid for a certain time and it's under the UK comsumer laws?
Help! |

Hi Stevo,
Generally speaking a person cannot be arrested for his debts. However, once the person comes back, the Statute of Limitations restart. You will have to check your country and state laws on Statute of Limitations.
Thanks,
