How do I get collection accounts removed from my report when they have been awarded to my ex spouse through divorce proceedings?

Hi..I just want to welcome you to this forum. I'm not an 'expert' on how to handle some debts. But..i just want to let you know there are ALOT of people that can help you. I'm sure one of them will be along shortly. Please hang in there.

Hi usdlo
You should send a dispute letter along with a copy of the divorce proceeding papers which has awarded the debt burden to your ex-spouse, to the credit bureaus by certified mail. The credit bureaus will check it out and will remove the listing from the credit report. You can find a sample debt validation letter by visiting the url http://www.creditmagic.org/repair/dispute-letter.html

Have a question about this. I'm divorced now. My ex and still have debts in BOTH of our names. However....our Divorce papers don't have anything specific in it..I mean who pays what, etc. Also..my xe-father-in-law co-signed for most of them. can I have them 'removed' from my CR?

Hi Chargers
If the debt is in you name as well as your ex husband's name, you both are liable for the debt and so it will appear in your credit report for seven years along with the credit report of your husband. You cannot get it removed from your report until and unless you pay off the debt and make the creditor agree to pay for deletion agreement in writing. Moreover, since your father-in-law is the cosigner for most of the loan agreements, the outstanding debts may also get listed in his credit report.
