If an unpaid (original) account was sold to a collection agency, is it possible to remove the original account off of my credit, since it's now showing that it's in collections?

Nope, it’s not possible. It will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date of your first default. After that time period it will automatically be removed from your credit report.
