Subject: Retrieving account numbers not fully listed on credit report

Posted on Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:15 am

As in how do I do it? I need to dispute a few accounts I just discovered on my credit report, and the account numbers listed from the collection agencies are either partials, or completely X'd out.

How do I obtain them without hopefully offering my ssn, or otherwise, acknowledging/reseting these supposed "debts" to the agencies?

Thanks!

You can go on the credit reporting agency websites and file disputes, they will already have your ssn so you would not be giving them anything that they don't already have.

You can send a copy of the credit report along with a debt validation letter to the collection agency or the creditor whose name you find in your report. Since the credit report do not mention your social security number, it will be kept secret. Now, the CAs need to reply to the debt validation letter within 30 days from the date of receipt of your letter else they cannot proceed any more towards collecting the debt. Credit report contains your name and your address from which they can retrieve the information.

If you do not want to disclose the social security number, you can send a letter to the bureaus disputing the listings in the credit report and ask them to provide the details of the account numbers with the creditors whose name is listed in your credit report. As per the Fair credit reporting act, the creditor must provide you with complete details regarding the account numbers they have listed in your credit report. Alternatively you can also follow the steps as Carol said.

We can not give you account numbers here at the credit magic forum. You may have reached us in error. You can refer to the above posts if you are looking to get account numbers you need.

The question here is how to get the account numbers. The 3 major credit bureaus only show partials, TrueCredit only gives you partials and the collection letters from creditors only show the in-house account numbers. Again, how can a citizen obtain the actual account numbers to those accounts?

As far as I know they do every ones like that I know mine are listed the same way. But when you call the credit agencies they only ask for like the first four numbers and then they know what account you are referring to.

It is in your best interests not to dispute online. Send a letter to each of the credit agencies with the item you are disputing along with the partial account number. The CRA should be able to figure out which entries you are referring to. And you don't need to go into alot of detail or quote the FCRA (they already know the law). Simply state that you are disputing these entries and ask them to delete if the entries can not be verified.
