Subject: $39.95 scam

Posted on Sat Nov 10, 2007 1:40 am

I had $39.95 taken out of my checking account, all it had was a phone number and ACTNOW, so I called to find out what it was. It just happened to be a roadside assistance program that I never signed up for, they have no clue how they got my application, so they say, they asked me, did I respond to an ad or a flyer? NO, I did not. They will cancel my 90 day free trail that cost $39.95.

The reason I am posting this is to tell you that you should keep an eye on your checking account and credit card statements. I never applied for this service, I have no idea how they would have gotten my information. They said they will investigate it and get back to me and it will take 10-15 days to refund my money.

I had this happen to me about six months ago and had to go to the bank and file forms to get my money back for a television service that I never had or applied for, it was for $66, I have no clue how they got my information either. I got my money back on this one.

So keep an eye on your accounts and if you have an elderly parent, watch theirs too.

Oh my gosh good! that's horrile... have you made transactions online lately that involve your debit card? that's the only way that i can think of on face that this could happen, though i'm sure they have several ways of getting our info.
I do have parents that are not internet savvy...my mom does all of her shopping for holidays through catalogs and uses her retail credit cards, that way if there is a problem it's easier to dispute with a credit card than dealing with a bank account that's wiped out. I had to show mom to look for the https:// feature, if it has an 's' at the end of that http then it should be secure. despite that though she doesn't use the internet to shop Smile oh well i tried Wink
i'm really sorry and disturbed about this one. thanks for the warning

We have always warned regarding scams. They are everywhere. That is why I think a hundred times and do research before I give out personal information over the phone or online. I cannot take a chance with my money.

Its really sad to know what happened to your money Good. In fact there has been so many posts before on such scams. People actually landed in this forum looking for some other company. It was difficult to make them understand that this is just a forum and not the company. I guess thousands have been scammed in the same way. The only precaution is to be careful while giving out personal information.

They said they will let me know where the order came from, they gave me a confirmation number and seemed genuine that they did not want their name out there like that. So who knows could be one of those pyramid scamming salesman. I will update you guys when they call and let me know, if they call and let me know, they said they would be in touch with in the ten day time frame. I don't know whether to believe them or not, guess I will just have to wait and see. Hopefully they return the money, otherwise I know I have 6 months to dispute it through my bank. I will have to go there and do the paperwork, but I will give them a chance to return it first.

I am gonna call them again, to see what is up, I did not get my refund yet, they said 7 to 10 working days, will watch for a few days and will be calling by the end of next week if I don't see the money in my account.

These companies are often found in the small print attached to another application or contract that you may have signed or applied to. You have to read the fine print. This is where you will find all the stuff that they don't want you to know, so I say enlarge the text and read it all. If you don't have time to read it, don't sign it, you won't know what you are getting into if you don't read it.

Hello Dadummy great to see you here. Thats a lot of information here.

Actually scams happen because we are not aware. Duh things can be done straight if we read. Lack of time=no reading=pitfall Smile. Take some time out atleast to save some money.

great advice Dadummy, I have no clue where this offer would have fell in though, I have not applied for anything lately. He did ask if I got any offers in the mail, not any that I have responded to anyway. Hopefully they will return my money over the next few days.

I think 'Acccount Now' is a secured debit card. I recieved an 'ad', in the mail, about them. According to the ad, you can deposit paychecks, etc, to this card. I din't see a $39.95 fee, however. WOW!! Cards like this, I suppose you REALLY have to look at. 'They' talk like it's a great deal...until; you 'join' them.

This scam was actually for road side assistance, I found that out later, I have roadside on my car from the dealership, I would not have purchased double coverage. It is crazy sdchargers, I guess it was in some fine print somewhere from what they say. hard to tell, I don't care as long as I get my money back.

I am sure they will refund your money, sounded like from your post that they did not advocate sneaky sales that would fall into the fine print of some other service. I don't think that companies should be allowed to do this, alot of times it is stuff like credit watching for a year or this type of service like your road side assistance, all it does is discredit the company by using these ways to get customers, I guess they think it will just go un noticed and they can continue to draft payment from your checking account. Best to keep an eye on all accounts.
