I have a credit score of 617.I just tried to buy a car.The salesman lead me on to a third party. He stated that because I have a repossesion as of the year 2001($12,000.00).He would rather they take it off for me before it gets charged off and my credit score would shoot up to around 700.This will enable me to get a better interest rate and possible finance a new car rather than pre-owned, not that it matters. Is it worth taking the service. The cost is only $200.00 plus $50 for each adjustments made

I think the offer is good till it is not reported to the CRA. That might hurt your score.

Denon, if you can afford that minimum cost for adjustments made, then i guess its a good deal for you to make. But be aware of the pros and cons.

Hi Sundry,

These are certain ways by which you can make a credit record.

* Open a checking or a savings account or may be both. This does not contribute towards the credit building but definitely increases your reliability.

* Make an application for a departmental store card. Make good regular payments

* Provide with the summary of your past credit report to the CRA here. Get the information from your previous bank or the credit card organization as to where they reported to. This credit bureau of your former hometown will be proof of your past credit.

All the best
Hope this helps you.

Hi There Sundry

Just adding a point to what Laura had to say

You can ask whether you can deposit funds at a financial institution so that they act as a collateral for a credit card. Some organizations issue credit cards with a credit limit of the amount you deposit. You can try this.

When you apply for credit many institutions ask for only your salary and job but there are many institutions that ask for your credit history and turn to the credit bureaus for your credit file. This defines your credibility to attain a credit. thus keep up the courage and keep a good track record for your future endeavor.

Good Luck
Polly:)

Thanks Laura for the reply. Not sure how this could hurt my credit score and the key is that would it raise my credit score.I suppose my thing is would it affect me in the long run or is it just a temporary fix.

Hi Denon

I apologize. I guess there was a misunderstanding with your problem. As far as my knowledge goes there are many companies who make false promises and put you in a mess.

Tell me something, how did come to know that your score will actually shoot up to 700? Is there any calculation on the basis of which the salesman gave you this information?

I also need to know what kind of adjustments they are asking you to pay for. How many adjustments would be there? There are a lot of scams going on. It can hurt your credit history in a massive way.

If you really want to buy a car why don’t you improve your financial situation first and then go for it? This is just a suggestion. As per my suggestion do not fall for this, it would land you in a fix.

Good Luck

Hi Denon,

I agree with Laura. This can be a scam. No one can actually tell you that they can improve your score to 700. How do they know how to do it. the CRA's are very stringent with their rules.

What adjustments are they talking about? Is that $200 a one time payment? Another thing, did they tell you how long it would take them to pay off the $12,000 and improve your credit score. I smell it fishy Denon.

Be careful

Thanks for the reply.I have not had the chance to meet up with them yet.I will be addressing some questions before commencing on anything.I would want them to tell me exactly what they intend to do, how, and if it is legal and what are the long term effects. If they can convince me and authenthicate what they say,. then if it is reasonable then we might move to the next step. However I have yet to set up an apointment as nobody has returned my messages. If they are a fish, that is ok because I am a cat.

That cat thing was really good Denon. Cant help but laugh. Do keep on your guard and let us know what happens incase they actually answer your messages. Keep us posted as to what you did. We will be more than glad to know.

Hi Denon,

Great to hear from you. It is good that you know how to deal with the situation. There are people who fall easy prey to these scamsters. We want people to be more aware of such criminal acts. Hope to succeed someday :).

Please keep us informed as to how you go about the whole thing if it works out.

Denon you are really bold. Your confidence gives a boost and feels good that people actually know how to handle these situations. It would be the best if you dont let them understand that you smelled a fish  and you are a CAT  as well.

Please share your experiences with us. It would be great.

I've looked into a few 'credit repair' places. Alot of them 'Promise you the moon". But.....when you actually are 'stuck' with them, and can't pay their fee, etc. The 'credit repair' companies report that you are deliquent on your accounts!! Which can scale your score even lower!! ( Trust me, I know!!) With some of the fees, these companies ask for, you can probably pay an old account off, yourself. As I have learned, a 'good' credit score takes time to improve. Stick with it, and you will be surprised!! " You have to learn to crawl before you walk, etc." ( I like that saying!!)

Thu, 08/23/2007 - 21:05 Permalink

Yes a credit repair company does not do anything that we cannot do ourselves. So why waste the money which can be used to pay off one pending bill?

You have to learn to crawl before you walk

This one is really great. Do you really have a store of such inspiring quotes that relate so well to the situation? :)

Thanks, Laura!! I think it does make alot of sense. Even if you have a low/'fixed' income, you can slowly, but, surely save to pay off debts. You MAY find a company to help you...I don't know. But.....I know there are SOO many people that want things paid off right away ( me, included). But..realilty is..this takes time.

Raising your score that much in that short of a time will be impossible, you could do some raising by applying for a credit card, shop for a little and then pay it down and maintain a good payment history on the card, this will improve your score, but not 100 points in that amount of time.

But I could be wrong, maybe someone else has some fantastic way, so hang out and wait for others to come on board and answer.

I agree with goodnatured, that seems like an impossible mission to raise your score that quickly. I wish it were that fast and that easy. I do agree that you could start building your credit with one card and go from there. It will be a start anyway.

I wanna add my '2 cents' to this conversasion ( as usual..LOL). Also.every time you apply for credit, your credit score does go down a bit.

kmcalester
if you get someone to add you as an authorized user or joint account holder on an credit account this may raise your account the desired amount depending on the age and payment history of the account.

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 01:31 Permalink

They do take into consideration on a joint account, but I don't know about any authorized user, I don't think any of there information, they have the primary account holder to deal with.

I would also suggest opening a CC so that you can start to build credit history

Mon, 07/14/2008 - 00:15 Permalink

Good advice, CMB. However.......please be really careful of those 'bad credit CC's'. They can really have a HIGH % on them and alot of fees.

Do your research, make sure you read the fine print and all the contract mumbo jumbo.

Tue, 07/15/2008 - 03:07 Permalink

I agree, GOODNATURED. All of that " mumbo jumbo" can really get ya. Ask questions if you need to....not that they will actually be answered ( personal experience, I guess.)

Tue, 07/15/2008 - 04:17 Permalink

Well, what amazes me is that they tell you all the good stuff up front and hide the potentially bad parts in the fine print. It is up to you as the consumer to look a little deeper and find out everything you can, after all it is your credit score that this will affect in the long run.

Wed, 07/16/2008 - 14:35 Permalink

Thats how they lure you in good natured. It is exactly what happened to me 6 or so years ago that got me a bad mark on my credit. I had no credit and took an offer. Wasn't a good move at all.

Fireyone,
I think it will be pretty tough to get credit right now, with the new laws that are being passed for the credit card companies they will have to be more selective on who they extend credit too and they can not just raise intrest when they want with out giving the consumer ample time to respond and get it paid off prior to the new rate taking effect.

Fri, 08/28/2009 - 10:25 Permalink

Yes and this should have been something the government could have expected when the gave the credit card companies time to comply with the new laws. Just before the new laws were to take effect they pulled this whammy. Next time they need to enfirce and pass laws a little more quickly. Do you know where I can find any of the new laws that took effect so I can review the changes that ere made?

Hi all
This is rony dsouza from USA.
I want to know about whole concept of credit scores
could anyone here help me?

Wed, 10/21/2009 - 12:22 Permalink

Hi Rony,

A credit score is a numerical expression of the credit worthiness of individuals. It is based on the evaluation of the credit report which contains payment history of the individual. Normally lenders or creditors check the credit reports and scores of an individual before extending credit to that person. Credit score is normally counted based on the method introduced by Fair Isaac Corporation. The credit score from there on has come to be known as FICO score. Whenever, there is a negative listing reported in your credit report, the score goes down and vice versa. There are several ways of improving the credit score as well.

Hey There,

My husband and I are looking to purchase house within the next few months. (probably unrealistic, I know) I have a 597 and he has a 564. I know that FHA will not even consider you unless you have at least a 620. Understandably so. We have about $700.00 in collections, and about $12,000.00 in revolving debt. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we should start with upping our credit scores in a pinch. We have some things going on with our rental situation that we don't want to run into again. (The house we live in is being sold in a few months. We were under the impression that we could stay as long as we'd like, so we adopted a second dog.) I'm also tired of paying house payments, and having nothing to show for it. Have already started making payments on our collections, and my husband is trying to pay down the balance of his main credit card. Is there a specific ratio of credit points per dollar? Say $10 equals 1 point? I just don't want to go through the financial trouble of paying off $700.00 in collections and find out that, that is not what's holding our credit score down. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me...I need guidance. I am just SO lost. Thank you so much!!!

There is one way...find a family or spouse..have them put your name under one of their bank accounts only if they have good credit :)
