Is it possible to have a charge off removed from your credit

I had a department store credit card that is reporting on my credit report as a charge off account. Since then I paid off the credit card and the creditor told me they would update my credit report to show paid as agreed and reopen me another account. I also have that in writing from the creditor. They did update my credit report to show paid as agreed but the charge off is still on my credit report as well. The charge off and the paid as agreed account is listed with the same account number on my credit report. Is there something I can do to get the creditor to remove the charge off from my credit report.

Hello Guest and welcome to credit magic,

You may be able to dispute this debt due to the fact they are reporting the debt twice. I would get a dispute letter out in the mail or visit the credit bureaus web site. If you send out the dispute by mail be sure to include the copy of any evidence you have proving the terms the credit card company agreed to. This should take care of the problem. I also would think twice before opening another account with them.

Hi Guest,

First, call the credit company and talk to them again regarding the letter and the agreement that took place between you two. If your call falls on deaf ears, then you can dispute it with the credit bureau. Send a dispute letter to them stating that you have settled the debt. Send it via certified mail so that you have the return receipt with you. Also do not forget to send the documents that you have as proof of your agreement with the company along with the letter.
