Old medical bill on credit report

Hi all,

Other than one 'adverse' thing in my credit reports, I think that my report is generally pretty good. It is a 75$ medical bill from over 5 years ago. I was not aware of this debt.

It is now in collections. So, if I pay it now, will it have any impact on my credit? I have heard that even paying something can extend the 7 years for which it can get reported? Is there any way I can remove it? If there is what should I do?

Thanks.

Hi Neva,

So, if I pay it now, will it have any impact on my credit?

Yes, paying off an old collections can hurt your credit score initially as the negative comes to the present. However, this is a medical bill in collections. So, once you pay off the dues, according to a new law the collections will have to removed within 30-45 days of your payment.

Keep proof of your payment. If the collection does not get removed within the 30-45 days, you can dispute it with the credit bureaus.

Thanks

do you have all your credit reports?
what state are you in?
what is the original creditor and the name of the CA?
what is the date of first delinquency? 30 days after last payment

Yes, when you pay off a debt the negative will remain for the next 7 years.

Thanks,
