Hi Groupleader
Since you have the proof of the payment towards the debt, you can send a copy of it along with a dispute letter to the credit bureaus. The credit bureaus will verify it and will change the status to "settled for less" in your report. If the credit bureaus do not change the status of the listing, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Justin, can he ask the credit bureau to list it another way like "paid as agreed"? I remember you and I had a discussion about what wording was better to have on your credit report.

I agree with the above posts and will offer this advice:
Send the CA a DV letter asap then, Along with the CRAs and FTC send copies of your proof and situation to the BBB & possibly your local AG. IF they don't help you get the desired result file a small claims suit for FCRA violations. Bring your proof, copies of your letters to the above parties, copies of your DV letter & cert mail info and a letter from your mortgage company (to show that you have been harmed from the false info.) to court with you. It will be the easiest $1k you have ever made and the CA will be forced to change the tradeline.

I thought this was a violation of the FCRA. I am glad they stuck penalties in place so people can at least get something for all their time and effort. Sometimes matters like these can take time to deal with and why should they not be paid if all it would have taken was for the other company to just correct the matter. A person does not necessarly need an atty for samll claims either do they?
