Hi... new to this site... well to any sites that would help me like this one. Not sure what to do... tired of crying...

I was issued a summons yesterday and I'm feeling very unprepared and scared.

I will go to the court summons but I'm not sure what to do when I get there.

Since you have received a summon, the first step is to file a response to the summon. For this you need to visit the court which send you the summon and file visit the clerks office there. File and answer to the summon in the format provided where you may mention whether you agree to the summon or not. If you do not file a response to the summon, there can be a default judgment against you by the creditor which can even result in garnishment of your wage or even your bank account.

Yes, the first step is filing an answer to the summon to avoid default judgment. Now if you do not agree with the debt with which you are charged, you can either send a debt validation letter by certified mail soon after you file an answer to the summon or ask for debt validation on the court date. If the creditor cannot validate the debt, the judgment will be in your favor. However, if the debt is validated properly, try to settle the debt outside the court since a judgment will lower your credit score.

You should pay off the creidt cards first. Sometimes it makes sense to pay off the repo, but that depends upon the situation. You should contact the creidtor of the car repo to see if you can change the terms of the deal. Talk to a Consumer Credit Counseling Service to help you come up with a plan to repay your loans. As for the student debt (I am assuming they are government subsidized), it is best to make the minimum payments on them until you pay off your creidt card debt since the interest rate is lower than your creidt cards.
