I don't know what I owe because ATT Wireless told me in 2004 that I did not owe anything on my cell phone bill. I turn in off prior to me going to Germany. So can I just paid this bill and get it off my credit report.

Is it legal for debt collectors to sell to other debt collectors?

Yes, most collection agencies who have purchased the debt from original creditors, sells off the debt to other junk debt buyers if they somehow fail to collect the debt and it is legal. They cannot collect the debt mostly because they are not able to provide proper debt validation.

When will this end?

This process of reporting the debt to the bureaus will continue for seven years and six months from the date you have made the last missed payment towards the debt.

Hi Paschal
If you are sure that the debts do not belong to you, I think that you should dispute the debt directly with the bureaus and get it removed from your credit report. Now, if two of your debts are in collection since 2003, it means that over 5 years have passed since you have made the last payment towards the debt and so you should check whether the SOL for the debt has expired or not. You can find sample dispute letters if you visit the link letters of credit.

We had a so called debt to AT&T that we knew nothing about. We rec'd a debt collection notice from a company, we sent off copy of paid bill (through credit card....lots of paper trail). The collection ended up with Palisades. When once again trying to clear up the dispute, showing proof of payment etc., the response we rec'd from the owner/operator was that "someday you will need credit and you will pay me." This company works on bully tactics to receive payment that is not necessarily owed. This company could care less about truth and helping honest people keep good credit reports. The sad part is he was right. Without double paying the bill we would not have rec'd our home mortgage due to the stiff laws set in effect by the current crisis in banking (might I add due to irresponsible people). We were forced to look at the situation as a cost of doing business and had the bank put instructions in the loan to pay Palisades through escrow because having worked real estate, the only way to prove this was ONCE again taken care of was through escrow, the legal agency. After all of this, it is still on our credit report. CA law says it can stay on for seven years!

Hi mrs. Shearer,

What I understand from your post is that you have paid twice for a single debt. If a collection agency (CA) is bullying you, under the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act, you have every right to dispute. Before paying any money to the CA it is necessary to demand a written agreement that the debt will be removed from your credit report.

Now that you have already paid the debt and it still remains as a negative remark you can send a dispute letter to the credit bureau and get them corrected. Please visit this link to find a sample of dispute letter: http://www.creditmagic.org/repair/dispute-letter.html

Hi MMM,

Did you ask for a debt validation before paying off the debt? Were Pallisades Collection able to produce other documents, apart from the contract with AT&T. If they have provided you with your past payment history with AT&T or any other paper to show that they have purchased the debt, then your debt is valid.
In case you have not asked for debt validation, the collection agency(CA) is not required to provide you with any documents. You should always verify before making any payment, whether the CA is legally authorized to collect your debt. As far as I know once the payment is made, there is no way you can reverse it.

Palisades reported an AT&T collection for $61 in July 2008 for an account that was suppose to be delinquent since 03/2002. Should there not be some kind of limitations it will appear on my credit report? If I challenge it does the time limit start over?

Thanks.

There is a bill for AT&T on my credit report from 2001. The bill is not mine, nor has it been in my name. It was an account of a family member, who is has been deceased since 2005. Have tried to contact Palisades to explain this, but they seem to think this is my bill. They have now put it, without our permission, in my husbands name. They are using bully tactics to get us to give in a pay the bill. What does it take for them to stop harrassing me, and get this bill off my credit report?

Straightaway go for a "Cease and Desist" letter. Type the letter properly and clearly state that you do not want them to call you anymore.

Dispute this debt with the credit bureaus through a certified mail and ask for return receipt. If it still doesn't get removed, ask for validation. Remember to do all of these in certified mail and don't forget the return receipt.

I had a similar problem with Palisades and a supposedly unpaid debt with Verizon. This bill was dated for July, 2001. I did all that I was supposed to do, as I wasn't even the person who ran up the charges. This person had a similar name, but lived in Ohio, while I have lived in Texas for over 30 years. I checked all 3 credit agencies, and they had this other name listed with my reports. I took care of getting all of that deleted. This must have happened 3-4 years ago.

Now today, I got the very same dunning letter from Palisades/Verizon!

Unfortunately I don't think I saved anything from the first encounter, but I am looking.

Meanwhile, how can this happen all over again????
