Debt settled, Not Mine, What steps to take

Hello, My name is Daniel, I am in the process of starting to clean up my credit.. I have been lurking around here for a few weeks and like everything.. The one thing i cannot find, or havent seen I should say is information on my situation..

I have an account on my credit report that is listed as settled for less than the balance. The CA is Cach LLC, now I do not think this is my account and believe it to be my fathers account. He has the same name.. I have never settled an account for less.. Now what should the steps be to me getting this removed..
Do I start with a dispute to the CRA? If it comes back verified do I then dispute with the CA, or do a debt validation..

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks to this forum I feel confident I can have great credit and not worry so much..

thanks
Dan

Dispute the debt with the Credit Bureaus. They will then ask the creditor to validate the debt with proper proofs. If the debt cannot be validated it will be removed from your report.

Hi Dan, This happened to my husband when we first started getting credit. Do as Carol says and dispute the debt. Let them know what may have caused the mix up. You and your father must have simular names. My husband and father did and it was really a mess.
Just have faith this may take a little time and leg work but can be resolved. Let us know of your progress and if you need anymore assistance.

Thanks carol, and fireyone.. My father and I have the same name but I was never listed as a JR because my parents were told that would be worse.. Go figure.. Ill dispute the debt after the first wave of letters come back, does the bureaus have from the day that they recieve to 30 days for response, or does it start on the day it is postmarked...
