Repairing credit

Hi,

I have a question about repairing my credit and credit scores. Due to a past hardship and illness, I had settled on many accounts and had a court judgment too. I have been paying on it for over a year regularly. So, how do you rebuild? My mortgage was just paid in full and there are no other credit card debt.

I am in a relationship and my partner has excellent credit. I would like to know if I am added to a his card to start building, will it put him in any danger to his credit. If so, then what is the best way to proceed?

Hi Salina,

There are various ways in which you can repair your credit. You need to check your credit report very carefully, and find out the wrong listings and negative listings on it. Then file disputes on the wrong listings with the credit bureaus with needed proof.

You have said

Are these accounts reported as "Paid"? If the status is showing "Paid", then you have nothing much to do about those accounts.

You can get added as an authorized user on your partner's account. If your partner has good credit, it will help in boosting your credit. However, your bad credit won't hurt the credit of the account owner.

You can also get a new secured credit card to increase your credit score. Secured credit cards are available even with low score. Before getting the card, you should inquire if the card company reports to all the three credit bureaus. You can use the card for making purchases, and then ontime payments on the card to improve your credit score.

Thanks,

Aaron

We all make financial mistakes at one point or another. Your ability to learn from those financial mistakes and avoid them in the future is what is going to help you maintain a good credit score and save for the long run.
