What state are you from?

Some states have statute of limitations as early as 3 years you might be outside of their reach - the debt might be time barred.

You might offer to pay in exchange for deletion, not all companies do this, but some will, it is worth asking if you have the means to pay.

If you disagree with the balances you can always send them a request for debt validation - to the collection agencies.

If you settle be sure to get everything in writing.

Hi,

Nightstar is correct. You should first check the Statute of Limitations (SOL) on your debts. SOL is the time limit within which the creditor or collection agency will be able to sue you for not paying the dues. However, if the SOL has expired, you need not worry, cause they won't be able to sue you for the debts. Another important thing is that, expiration of SOL does not mean that the collection process may stop. SOL varies according to the state and the account type.

After this you can try to validate your debts. With debt validation you will be able to find out whether or not you actually owe the debts. It will also provide you with the details of the amount owed by you and if the collection agency really has the power to collect. You will get a sample validation letter at http://www.creditmagic.org/repair/sampleletter-debtvalidation.html .

While negotiating the settlements on the amount to be paid, request the creditors or the collection agencies to agree to a "Pay for delete" (PFD) agreement. If the creditors and collection agencies agree to the PFD, your account will get reported as "Paid". You can get a sample PFD at http://www.creditmagic.org/repair/pay-for-delete.html .

After paying off the dues, check your credit report once again to check whether or not the accounts has been reported as paid. Remember to send all the letters through certified mail, requesting a return receipt. You should also get all the agreements in writing, and keep with you all the payment receipts for dispute purposes, if any.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Aaron
