My husband is receiving calls from a debt collector for a credit card debt in 1989. This has been going on for several years; unfortunately, I have never kept track of the calls. At first they would not talk to me so I could not get any information (my husband was in the hospital). Finally, someone told me that a payment had been made in 1989, but not what it was for. I told them that he had been incarcerated in 1989, so he could not have made a payment. I am still getting calls, and now someone wants to talk to me. Can they still be calling after all this time?

That's odd that they would be calling after 20 years. Credit/collections fall off of your credit report about 7 years after the last activity on an account. Since a payment hasn't been made since 1989 that account should be long gone. I'm assuming the creditor can still pursue the outstanding debt, but it can't effect the credit.
