Hello,
If I am going to dispute a collection should I do it with the credit bureau as well as write a letter to the collector asking them to validate the debt? Or should I just dispute with one? And if one, which one is better to start with? OH, and BTW, I found out when I got my credit reports that this debt is showing as a public record filed with the court in my district! I live in Michigan. How should I proceed? Thank you very much. Any help with this is truely appreciated.

yes doc is correct it is always best to dispute it with both the original creditor and the collection agency.

jacqueflood , You should always dispute both. Also be sure to send dispute letters to all three credit bureaus. Another good thing to mention is to send the letters by certified mail, return receipt requested. This will show that you did in fact ask for validation if they pursue this debt in court, which may be what has already been done.
You say the debt is listed in the public records at the courthouse? Usually this is only done when a bankrupcy is filed or a creditor has brought forth a law suit.

OP,....you said it's on Public Record, at 'your' courthouse? Do you happen to know how long the 'record' has been there? Usually if some kind of lawsuit was reported to 'your' Courthouse, the Courts would have notified you right away. Also..you said the debt is on your CR..how long has it been on your CR? Would like to know so (possibly?) I can help.
