added as authorized user (piggybacking)

My girlfriend added my as an "authorized user" on her Best Buy Card (HSBC). When we called they only asked my First/Last name and Address. We share an address. They did NOT ask for my SS#. The whole purpose of this is so this card reports to my credit. I believe the term is "piggy backing" whick was reinstated by FICO last year. How will the creditor report if they didn't ask for my SS#?

I actually did the same thing for my wife a few years back when we were trying to establish her credit. Oddly enough it was with HSBC as well(not best buy though).

I called and asked for a card with her name on it. I don't remember them asking me for her Social Security number either but sure enough, about six months later when I checked our free credit reports it was showing under her credit as well as if she has been on it since the day it was opened. It really helped her credit rating as well!

I can't tell you for sure if it will work for you as well. I've heard both sides to the story when it comes to piggy backing. For some people it seems to work fine and for others it won't. It did work for us though and with it being with HSBC as well I'd say you have a good shot of it working. I don't know how long it may take though.

Best of luck!

Hi Diem,

This may get listed on your credit report though they have not asked for your social security number. Moreover, if both your and your girlfriend have the same address, it may get listed on your credit report.

Thanks,

Aaron
