Can a creditor come back after you a year or two after sendi

I have a question! :-) I was in Chapter 13 and it has since been dismissed (not discharged). While we were in it, a creditor had sent us a check for $306 that they had collected from us and a letter that states that the account has been "settled/closed". This was a few years ago, we just received a letter from them now wanting to collect on the debt again. When we attempted to call them, they said that we still owe it, it's still open and that we need to contact our attorney (who is a dead beat and the whole reason why we are dismissed and not discharged). Is this legal? If we have it in writing that it's been closed/settled, can they still come back at us for this debt years later?

Thanks!
