Creditors after my dad who lives only on SSI

My dad has a 10k bank debt primarily from overdrafts, overdraft fees and interests. I didn't know about this until I visited him last year as I was based overseas then.
He was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's which prompted me to move with him temporarily to look after him. Collecting agents are calling him everyday. Shall I call the agents and explain to them my dad's situation or shall I just ignore the calls? My dad has no assets and lives only on SSI.
What shall I do?

It would have been a lot better if he could repay or settle his debt. None can garnish his SSI benefits though. If the debts are past the SOL, then he shouldn't think of paying them now.
