Hi,
I have a rather common name and so every day, I come home from work to find several phone messages looking for people with similar sounding names, wanting to collect on a debt. This is rather disturbing, since my FICO score is above 800 and I have no outstanding debt. How can put an end to these phone calls? I hear that if I respond to them and give them my info that I am NOT the person they are seeking, they just harden their methods to collect the debt.
Does anyone have a strategy on how to stop this? I have caller ID, so when the calls come in and I see them I let it go to the answering machine and delete it after its done. |

Hi Stanfield,
You can attend to these calls, and request them to stop calling you, and explain that you are not the person who owe them money. Remember to take down the names of these collection agencies. If they do not comply to your request, send them cease and desist letter, mentioning that you are well aware of your rights as a consumer, and will sue them if they fail to stop harassing you for debts which you don't owe.
You will get a sample cease and desist letter with this community, which you can use to write one of your own. If the colection calls from these agencies still continue, you can file complaints with the Better Business Bureau, and your State Attorney General.
Thanks,
