Subject: CA validated debt after CRA deleted it from my credit report

Posted on Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:11 am

I found out recently that I had a Verizon collection account from 2006 on my credit report. I worked overseas during that time. So, I sent a DV letter to the CA back in March 2008. They didn't respond within 30 days, so I disputed with CRA and they removed it.
Now, today I got a letter from CA validating the debt. Well, or so they say. It is a copy of the Verizon bill dated 2004 (not 2006).
Now I think that it may be mine. Can they report it back to CRA with the correct date 2004? Should I pay it? If yes-whom- CA or OC?

Hi Byron, welcome to the forum!

If you think it might be yours and you have to no kind of proof to disclaim it, then I would say pay it off if possible. If OC stands for original creditor than thats the way to go! If you pay it off directly from the source than more than likely it will be updated on your credit reports much faster. Some collection agencies are very slow to update your information. Make sure you get a reciept or some kind of confirmation just incase you end up having to dispute it through the credit bureaus.

Best of Luck

hi Byron
You first get a credit report and check whether Verizon has already updated it or not. If they have not yet updated it you should immediately repay the debt before it gets updated in your credit report. Now if it gets updated, try to come to a pay for deletion agreement with the CA. Since the debt has already been sold to the collection agency, you need to repay the loan back to the CA.

Yes, the collection agency can always report it back to the CRAs. So as Scott pointed out, it is better that you get a credit report to find out the status in your report. If it has not yet been updated, pay back the debt to the CA. Because if it gets updated in your credit report, it will stay there for seven years and lower your credit score.

Since you already had the listing removed you should try and get the CA to agree to a PFD agreement with payment

Is it possible to get them to remove it after the fact? I have three that I paid off and would like to see them removed from my report, do you think that writing them would do any good at all?

Hi goodnatured

Since you have already paid off your debt, it is very difficult to remove the listing from your credit report. It would have been possible if before you paid off the debt, you have asked your CA for PFD agreement. However, you can always request your CA to delete the listing as you have already paid off the debt. Atleast you can try it out.
